Health Improvements for Reentering Ex-offenders (HIRE)

Formerly incarcerated individuals returning to Long Island from Federal and State Correctional Facilities face multiple challenges in their attempt to reestablish themselves as productive members of society. The Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Inc. (LIAAC) in conjunction with the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. (EOC) and BiasHELP, Inc. seek to ease this transition by providing assistance and linkage with all the necessary services and skills to positively change the lives of Long Island's formerly incarcerated citizens.

HIRE is a three-pronged approach to provide health, economic and recidivism prevention services to individuals returning to Long Island from federal or state incarceration, who are either currently infected with HIV/AIDS or at a high risk for infection. HIRE seeks to increase the self-sufficiency of individuals and their families and decrease HIV-related high risk behaviors.

HIRE can provide the following services and linkages:

LIAAC
• Mobile free and confidential HIV rapid testing and counseling
• Facilitation of Hepatitis C screening
• Referrals to primary health care, mental health treatment and substance abuse treatment
• Instant linkage to Case Management services
• Support Groups

EOC
• Transportation assistance
• Child Care (6 weeks to 6 years)
• Vocational and educational assistance
• Housing assistance
• Mental retardation and disability services

BiasHELP
• Behavioral intervention for individuals and families
• Anger/Aggression Management Sessions

HIRE will offer opportunities for post-incarcerated individuals to ensure successful health outcomes & transition from incarceration to productive citizen. HIRE focuses intently on the medical, economic & psychosocial needs of reentrants, their families & social networks.

Funding for the HIRE Initiavive is provided by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS), and the Office of Minority Health (OMH).
