HIV/AIDS Hotline

1-877-TO-LIAAC (outside Nassau/Suffolk)
or 631-385-AIDS (within Nassau/Suffolk)

The LIAAC Hotline is nationally renowned as one of the longest running suburban models. Not only is our hotline a primary referral source for infected and affected Long Islanders looking for AIDS-related services, it is often the first place teens and adults turn to for confidential HIV education.

Rapidly changing trends in HIV testing, treatment and confidentiality protections provoke questions about: - the risks of unprotected sex when blood tests show "undetectable" levels of HIV - legal rights regarding the use of HIV test results - up-to-date information about combination therapies and local HIV drug trials - the impact of STD infections upon the risk of HIV transmission and the management of co-infection with Hepatitis C.

The Hotline handles approximately 10,000 calls a year from Nassau and Suffolk residents from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Hotline operators listen to the "question behind the question," and are always ready to explore sensitive issues with a hesitant caller.

Current written agreements with hundreds of local service organizations and professionals in private practice (as well as additional state and national resources) allow LIAAC to make numerous screened referrals to callers.

Two full-time hotline counselors work with callers who have questions and ensure that these individuals are equipped to make informed choices about available resources. In addition, the counselors regularly follow up with people living with HIV disease who use discrete services of the agency, such as legal clinic or support group, to ensure that assigned services meet their current needs. Bilingual counselors are available, and the hotline is TTY/TDD accessible.
